How to Choose Lingerie That Feels Comfortable

Most people don’t stop wearing lingerie because they don’t like how it looks.
They stop wearing it because it feels uncomfortable. Too tight. Too scratchy. Too stiff. Straps digging in. Lace itching. Underwire poking. Pieces that look amazing for five minutes but feel unbearable to wear an hour later.

Comfortable lingerie does exist — but it comes down to choosing the right styles, fabrics, and fit for your body and your lifestyle.

At The Blackmarket, comfort is one of the biggest things customers ask about during fittings and online messages.  What we have learned is the most-loved pieces are the ones so comfortable people forget they're wearing them.

Comfortable Lingerie Starts with the Right Fit

A lot of “uncomfortable lingerie” is actually just the wrong size or shape.

If bands are too tight, straps are carrying all the support, or fabric is sitting in the wrong spot, even expensive lingerie can feel terrible.

Signs that a piece probably doesn’t fit properly:

  • You are constantly adjusting it;
  • The underwire digs into your ribs or sides;
  • The back rides up
  • Lace cuts into your skin or your 'bulge' over the cups or side
  • The crotch or torso feels like its pulling up or too short
  • You can’t wait to take it off (for the wrong reasons:).

If this sounds familiar, start with our guide on How to choose lingerie that actually fits   or What is a bodysuit and how should it fit for a better understanding of how different styles should sit on the body.

Soft Fabrics Usually Matter More Than Fancy Details

A common mistake is choosing lingerie based only on appearance.

Heavy embroidery, stiff mesh, rough sequins, and rigid elastic can all look incredible in photos but feel very different in real life.

For everyday comfort, many people prefer:

  • Soft stretch lace
  • Lightweight mesh
  • Satin with stretch
  • Double-lined bodysuits
  • Wireless styles
  • Multiple adjustments
  • Adornments that can be removed
  • Flexible elastic rather than rigid strapping

If comfort is your priority, bodysuits and softer lace sets are often a great starting point.

Styles like the Just Like That Bodysuit or soft embroidered sets such as Electric Bubbleyum are highly recommended by our customers due to their light embroidery on stretch lace and multiple adjustments.

Not All Lace Feels the Same

This sometimes catches people by surprise.

We have discovered that cheaper lace is often stiff and scratchy because of the fibre quality and inferior finishing. Overly embroidered sets, particularly if the lace used is of differing quality can feel stiff and not sit well on the body. Softer lace has more stretch, flexibility, smoother edging and wears for longer.

A lace piece should soften against the skin after a few minutes — not feel sharper the longer you wear it.

If you’ve avoided lace in the past because it felt itchy, it may honestly have just been poor-quality lace, too much embroidery on more sensitive parts of your skin or the wrong fit.

Comfortable Doesn’t Have to Mean Boring

Its common to assume “comfortable lingerie” means beige basics or form fitting shape wear. It doesn’t.

Some of the most comfortable pieces are also the most confidence-boosting because they allow you to relax instead of constantly thinking about how your body looks or whether something is sitting properly.

That’s one reason bodysuits, chemises, stretch lace sets, and softer harness-inspired styles have become so popular — they can feel secure without feeling restrictive.

If you want something a little more elevated without sacrificing comfort, styles from our Contour Collection can be a good choice. For more information on contouring lingerie here is our guide to what is contour lingerie and why it is a popular go to.

Your Lifestyle Matters when Choosing Lingerie

The most comfortable lingerie for one person may feel awful for someone else!

Someone wanting:

  • all-day wear,
  • layering under clothes,
  • sensory comfort,
  • support,
  • confidence after body changes,
  • or something purely for special occasions

…will all need different things.

That’s why there isn’t one “best” lingerie style. One of the first questions we ask during our private in person or virtual fittings is 'what are you buying this for?' or 'how do you mean to wear it?' This is more important than colour or decorative accessories.

For example:

  • Bodysuits often work beautifully under clothing
  • Bodystockings are becoming increasing popular for relaxed comfort, layering for warmth and the no-dig-in factor.
  • Multi-piece sets can create more adjustability or be worn separately. Wear the bra and G-string throughout the day - add the garter belt and garters for date nights.

The Best Lingerie Is the Lingerie You’ll Actually Wear

The most expensive set in your drawer means nothing if it’s uncomfortable.

The pieces people come back to over and over are usually the ones that:

  • feel good,
  • fit properly,
  • move comfortably,
  • and make them feel themselves.

That’s the sweet spot.
